Accountant

Qualifications

  • Languages: Proficiency in English required
  • Education: Degree in Accounting from a recognized institution
  • Experience: Minimum of three years in progressively responsible accounting roles

Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think logically, solve problems independently, and perform detailed work with high accuracy

Additional Requirements

  • Recognized Canadian professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA), preferably in the public sector
  • Experience with capital or project accounting and familiarity with financial systems like SAP
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, reporting requirements, and practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex financial information for non-financial staff
  • Proficiency with Excel and Google Suite
  • Experience preparing complex financial statements and reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with all levels of management and staff
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Alignment with the organization’s Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies
  • Awareness that work hours may be reviewed and adjusted per City of Edmonton or Civic Service Union 52 agreements

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and professional accounting advice, guiding departments on financial policies and procedures
  • Maintain the General Ledger, including preparing, researching, and managing journal entries, reconciliations, and funding analysis
  • Manage the Fixed Asset System, ensuring financial integrity and adherence to capitalization rules
  • Prepare and organize year-end working papers, handle departmental financial statement preparation, and perform related year-end duties
